When you are in Japan, there is one thing you can’t miss: Pokémon! With everything starting in 1996, the Pokémon phenomenon is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Next to visiting the Pokémon Centers and Stores around the country, I also enjoy collecting the PokéFuta (manhole covers) which are getting more and more, and now there is a new spot in the Kanto region to visit as a Pokémon fan: Pokémon Post Boxes!
Because we are living not too far away from Yokohama, I had to visit the post boxes and surely would like to share photos and information about them with you!
Pokémon post boxes in Yokohama
The Pokémon post boxes got installed on July 7th, 2021. There are three different post boxes at two places that you can visit – and also use to send you letters or post cards.
The mail boxes look like monster balls with their red, white and black colors. They are topped with statues of Pikachu, Eevee and Piplup, which belong to the three most popular Pokémon right now. They all have an envelope with them and are ready to work for you. If you take a look closely, the envelopes are sealed with a Pokémon ball.

Where to find the Pokémon post boxes?
There are two locations you have to check to find the Pokémon post boxes in Yokohama. To make it more easier for you, I marked the places on Google maps, so you just need to follow the navigation.
- The first spot is located in front of the Yokohama City Hall. There you can find the two post boxes of Pikachu and Eevee.

Pokémon themed stamps
Together with the Pokémon post boxes collaboration, the Japan Post also released a series of art stamps in July. There were two different sheets available at the post offices nation-wide. One set with ten 63 yen stamps which look like classic Pokémon trading cards and another set with ten 84 yen stamps that went with colorful illustrations of Pikachu and its Pokémon friends. For sure, I couldn’t resist getting a sheet of each for my collection.
Furthermore a special collectible editon for 4.000 yen was announced that includes stamps, special promo cards and more. However, it was so popular that the released was switch into a lottery.
So now, are you ready to go to Yokohama and catch them all? I am a bit sad that the post boxes are announced to only stay temporarly, but who knows, mayby they change the contract and keep them – or new designs will come later. There is no end to the Pokémon phenomenon!
Extra tip: When you are in Yokohama anyway, don’t miss to visit the PokéFuta in front of Sakuragicho station which is showing two lovely Pikachu with the Yokohama skyline. Also, new manholes got installed in 2023 around Yokohama City.
